Scandium oxide is available in an ore
deposit of thortveitite, a
scandium silicate, in Norway. It
is also obtained as a byproduct
of extraction of uranium
ores. The oxide serves as a catalyst for
making acetone,
but scandium metal itself has no commercial
applications.
